The Software Developer's Press Release FAQ

border

Since the late 1960's, press releases have been an essential part of every software developer's toolbox. Press releases, also known as news releases and New Product Announcements, are an inexpensive way to generate interest and excitement about your software, ultimately resulting in more software sales.
For more than 25 years, Al Harberg of DP Directory has been working with software developers, full-time, to help them write press releases and submit them to the editors. In this FAQ you'll find all the information that you'll need to create and distribute news releases, so you can compete with the large software developers in your quest for free publicity and reviews on blogs and in magazines and newspapers.

Q: What is a Press Release?

A press release is an email that you deliver to bloggers, reviewers, editors, columnists, and tech writers about your software. If these highly influential people think their readers will be interested in your program, they'll post it online, or print a New Product Announcement in their publications. Those 250-word write-ups that you see in the computer magazines, for example, are your competitors' press releases. And they were printed for free.

press releases generate sales, not downloads Millions of software purchasers make their buying decisions based on the recommendations of these newspaper editors, magazine editors, and bloggers. Mastering press releases is a valuable skill that can increase your software sales, especially to that hard-to-reach group of people who don't spend a lot of time on the Internet.

Q: Which newspapers and magazines use news releases?

Almost all of the computer publications print information from press releases. They're eager to tell their readers about the newest software. Like yours. Business and consumer magazines print press releases. So do daily newspapers. Even if magazines and newspapers don't have dedicated "What's New" columns, their writers use New Product Announcements to stay informed about the latest software and computer gear.

Bloggers help spread the word about new and updated software. And the wire services and syndicated columnists welcome press releases, and use their magazines, newspapers, and online columns to inform their readers about software like yours. All of these key communicators are on the publicity lists that we use to distribute your news release to these influential writers.

Q: Do online editors use press releases?

Almost all newspapers and magazines have online editions of their publications. In some publications, the same editors decide which write-ups will appear in their print versions, and which will appear online. Some publications have web editors who make these decisions independently of the print version of the journal.

Q: Will magazines review my software for free?

Press releases are the way to get your software reviewed in blogs, newspapers, and magazines. And there's no charge to the software developer for this service.

press releases make your software important Most computer magazines and tech newspaper columnists use software press releases as filler items and short pieces in their editorial mix. It's not uncommon for these writers to grab three for four sentences from your press release for their publications.

If you send the editors a professionally-written press release, you increase your chances of getting an in-depth write-up online or in their newspaper or magazine.

If your press release does its job and you get a columnist excited about your application, they might do a full review of your program. The best coverage that you can get is an article that says, essentially, "I tried the software, and I like it." And these are exactly the type of articles that tech bloggers like to write.

Almost all of the editors keep press releases for 12 to 24 months, for reference and for use in their round-up articles. So, the announcement that you email to the editors today could show up in a "Best Utilities" or "Best Photography Applications" article a year or two from now.
